i am not the first person to have this idea. i did a first pass on my own before consulting with a japanese eureka seven wiki. while i didn't always go with their picks, in cases where they identified what seemed a more plausible reference, i did defer to them. and their list absolutely helped me realize that some of the songs i knew from their originals were probably being referenced two steps removed (by way of japanese bands covering and/or referencing them) in eureka seven. most importantly, it gave me confidence that enough of the songs could be identified that i probably wasn't wasting my time with the songs that really ran me through the ringer figuring out.

my methodology for selecting songs was to prioritize:

as i don't speak or read japanese, i had to use google translate a bunch. in cases where this methodology wasn't enough to get me to a particular song, where my lack of confidence with japanese language was complicating things, or where i suspected i was missing a more apparent reference, i have made note of the decision logic that i followed to make my final selections in the footnotes below.

I haven't seen the anime, though. This comic, anyway, the sense of wavy flying is wonderful. The number of lines is small, but I think this is a line that can not be drawn easily. It seems to be rough, and it is very simple and coolly determined. It even is beautiful. This book feels so good when you read it. The big sesame seeds and the abnormal tempo of the name surprise, and the scene unfolding in front of you makes your head crack. The expression is very technical and dynamic. To be honest, I don’t know what it is. It doesn't even come into my head. But it feels good. It’s fun to watch and I’m glad that this kind of stuff exists. It is undoubtedly a rare work. my methodology for selecting songs was to prioritize:

  • exact title/chapter matches
  • japanese rock bands
  • songs from 1990-2005
  • relevant thematic parallels
  • bands that already appeared once

as i don't speak or read japanese, i had to use google translate a bunch. in cases where this methodology wasn't enough to get me to a particular song, where my lack of confidence with japanese language was complicating things, or where i suspected i was missing a more apparent reference, i have made note of the decision logic that i followed to make my final selections in the footnotes below.

    • Tumblr culture and the whole reappropriation-without-context thing are a double-edged sword in that they both raise awareness of my work and also kind of devalue it at the same time. But I don’t know. I guess I don’t mind. Culture is evolving and I’m along for the ride.

    • ...I get to actually fix mistakes that were made so many years ago, or I get to spend more time on something that I always regretted rushing through. On the first book I made a lot of tiny changes that people won’t notice, just “correcting” faces and hair shapes and things. On the second book I started going to town a bit and really cleaned up and redrew some stuff. To some degree I might look at that when it comes out and wonder why I changed certain things at all, but it just felt kinda cathartic. These books were produced on a pretty tight schedule and I was always rushing, so in some sense I shipped incomplete products, especially the first three books. It’s nice to be able to address that...

    • I came up with the general idea for Seconds right after completing the first volume of Scott Pilgrim. I worked in a restaurant in Toronto for a little while to pay the bills while writing the second volume and planning the rest of the series, and I had a few ideas for this other story, a story about a restaurant. So, Seconds is about a restaurant, and the restaurant is called Seconds, and 90 percent of the story takes place within it. Beyond that it’s really hard for me to explain and I’m going to have to work on that so I can talk about it properly when it comes out

about

this website was built with strawberry starter and eleventy, but if anything is broken that's for sure my bad. "you're gone" and "engebrechtre ex" are public domain fonts used throughout the website. those were kindly provided by the folks at typodermic fonts. the color palette is borrowed from the sega japan dreamcast logo. i have never played a dreamcast game, but no aesthetic has ever gone that hard. our pfp is by sc00pie. the title of this website was adapted from "ode to a nightingale" by john keats. if john keats was alive today he would probably be a video essayist, so it's a good thing he's dead.
